Why Stoneware Clay?
If you've bought pottery, made pottery, or even admired pottery, you've probably heard of stoneware clay. But what is it, exactly, and why do we like to use it here at the studio? Well, get ready to get your hands dirty (metaphorically, of course) and learn why we are proud to say that our products are made from stoneware!
What's the Deal with Stoneware Clay?
Well, quite a lot actually! The main characteristic we love about stoneware is that it has a low porosity, which means it's less likely to absorb water compared to other types of clay. This makes it ideal for creating functional pieces like mugs, plates, and bowls that need to hold liquids without absorbing them. Like this guy!
Ok, But What Else Is So Special about Stoneware?
Stoneware is strong and durable due to its vitrification process at high firing temperatures. We're gonna' be honest, we like to use our microwaves and dishwashers around here, and using stoneware helps make our mugs safe for both of those
appliances. (No hand-washing required for this mug!)
On a similar note, stoneware is also heat resistant, so it can withstand high temperatures, This makes it great for serving dishes and coffee mugs.
And From A Potter's Perspective...
Stoneware clay has high plasticity, making it easy to shape and mold on the pottery wheel or by hand. This means it is perfect for our UG CHUG face mugs, since we first throw our mugs on the wheel and then add features and details by hand. In addition, stoneware clay has a low shrinkage rate, which helps minimize cracking during the drying and firing process.
So There You Have It!
These are the main reasons we love working with stoneware! We believe it helps us create a durable, versatile product that is easy to use and care for and one that we hope brings a smile to your face!
